The candle cost formula

Cost of one supply = what you paid ÷ how much you bought × how much one candle uses. Do that for wax, wick, jar, fragrance, dye, labels and packaging, then add them up. Add your time if you want your true cost.

Example: an 8 oz soy candle

Wax $2.00 + wick $0.12 + jar $2.00 + fragrance $1.40 + label $0.15 = $5.67 in materials. Sold at $18, that's $12.33 profit per candle before your time and fees.

Not just candles

The same math works for soap, jewelry, baked goods and anything you make. Profit Pop saves each recipe and shows your real profit on every sale.

Questions people ask

How do I figure out the cost of one candle?

For each supply, divide what you paid by how much you bought, then multiply by how much one candle uses. 10 lb (160 oz) of wax for $40 is 25¢ an ounce, so an 8 oz candle uses $2.00 of wax. Add every supply together.

How much should I charge for a candle?

A common rule for handmade goods is wholesale at about 2× your cost and retail at about 4× your cost. That leaves room for fees, shipping, mistakes and your time.

Should I include my time?

Yes, if you want to know your real profit. Even a modest hourly rate shows whether a product is worth making.
